Spearheaded by Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger in 1940s the Folk Revival peaked in popularity in the early 60s centred around Washington Square Park, NYC. Often associated with political dissent it was driven underground during the “Red Scare” of the 1950s. In 1952 the “Anthology of American Folk Music” was released and would become the Bible for the 1960s Greenwich Village folk influencing the likes of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez who would go on to revolutionize the genre and place it at the centre of American popular culture.
